We will be coming BACK to Italy after the Christmas break!!! I know some of you think we've already moved to Abu Dhabi but I can assure you that we haven't. I'm currently looking out the window, not at sand and sea, but at a very thick dense fog that has settled on Basiglio and doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon!!
So all of my carefully arranged plans have changed, but that's ok, I like planning so I'm just making new ones(how very Zen of me)

We are still in Italy, but its not long now before we'll be out of this lovely country. I'm sad to leave it, but excited about the next phase of our adventure.
The plan was to go from Canada(where we're heading for Christmas) to Abu Dhabi but now we've had word that the plan might be changing, so we *might* go straight to Abu Dhabi, or Reese and I might stay in Canada for an extra month, or we might come back to Italy until we mobilize to the middle east.
I'm voting for option #1 but I'm not really sure anyone cares what I think!!!!!!

So we're still in a kind of limbo, not really knowing what the heck is going on, which SERIOUSLY offends my OCD tendencies.

So we had the BEST brunch EVER at this restaurant on Sunday. You arrive and there is a bouncer outside with the little earpiece in and all to make sure you understand that it is 22 Euros per adult for the buffet. Then we were ushered into the restaurant where EVERYONE said Buon Giorno as we passed and smiled. Its decorated like an old school diner in the states but much more funky and modern. The buffet was AMAZING. Seriously I didn't want to stop eating but my waistline reminded me that I did!!!!!
The coffee was good, they had real Canadian maple syrup to go on the pancakes, we were in heaven!
I would HIGHLY recommend this place for Sunday brunch in Milan, it opens at noon.

Well this is quite the range for my 365!!! We have my cousin's wedding up first and our trip to Wales in mid June. Then it skips and starts back when Reese and I were in Canada at the end of July because my camera broke and had to be sent to the UK to fix and it took quite a while.

It was a very busy summer in our family, mid July we left for England for a week and went to the great yorkshire show which was very fun!! It was ridiculously COLD in Leeds that week and I'd packed for summer but other than that I was so happy we went. We saw Prince Charles!! Would have been a lot more thrilled if it was Prince Harry or William but what can you do. Reese said "Hi Prince Charles, Hi Duchess" and Lynn shook his hand!!!

Reese and I flew from there out to Canada for two weeks and tried to see as many people as we possibly could. We also packed up our house with the intention of selling it but the market is pretty crap right now in our area so we decided to rent it out again.

My camera also broke at the end of July and had to be sent into get fixed in the UK so my project 365 was put on hold for a month while I was waiting for it to come back.

Then Hailey flew back to Italy the same day as Reese and in the beginning of August and stayed with us for two weeks until Lorie, Jamie and George joined us and we did a whirlwind tour of Italy and then went to the Canary Islands for a week. I will try to catch up on pictures since I think I can post them here from flickr now, or potentially even from mobile me. I got frustrated with the lack of photo sharing space and gave up on my blog!
I'll figure it out though and then throw pictures your way!
Grocery shopping last week was insane, back to school and the line ups were awful and the place was PACKED with Italians.
This weekend is the festival of the Saint in our village and that is what we're planning on doing tonight!!!!! rides and games, music and street vendor food!!!!

Tiger mosquitos

So here in Italy there are THREE types of mosquitos that plague us in the village. The "Commune" which is your garden variety type of mosquito, bites, red bump from it etc etc. Then there is the "Tigre" or Tiger mosquito which is grey striped, more aggressive and larger than the regular one and its bites are more painful and can cause more swelling. We think these have been the ones attracted to Reese because the poor kid swells up horribly from some of her bites, like big, red, swollen areas of arms and legs that are hot to touch, it looks SO painful! Then there are the "Tropical" variety which explains itself really and which I haven't heard too many nasty things about yet. Being that we live near the rice paddies the mosquito levels are quite high here, so far they haven't been AWFUL, but it does make sitting out in the evening(which is the only time of day that its NOT boiling) rather distracting!!! We have a mosquito zapper upstairs and this has decreased the number of bites Reese was getting overnight( the one night she got 9 huge bites all over her arms and legs that swelled up by morning...poor thing!!!!!!!) there is spray here that you spray on your yard that deters the mosquitos for 6-8 hours. I'd use it but god only knows what chemicals are in it to keep them away so up until now we've avoided it at our house, might have to get some as the summer progresses though, not sure citronella candles are going to cut it!
Never thought I'd be missing Canadian mosquitos!!

Living in a hot climate

So when we moved to Italy I thought that this summer I would be lounging outside, in the sunshine working on getting a tan and reading books while Reese played in the shade in the yard. Being from Canada that's what we DO when it's nice in the summer!!! Well you don't do that here in Italy! Instead of lounging outside and soaking up the heat and sun I am literally hiding from it in my air conditioned living room!!!!!!
Today it feels like +40 with the humidity and that is WAY hotter than it needs to be in my opinion!! We still go outside to play a few times a day but the length of time that we stay out is quite short because you just get overheated SO quickly. HMMMMMMM

Italy- the clothing rules

I am the worst blogger ever!!!! Seriously I haven't even finished editing the pictures from Sicily yet! I will tell you one funny thing about life in Italy right now though. So this weekend it was +25C, which where I'm from in Canada is summer. Well everyone here is still walking around in toques and scarves, coats and sweaters!!!!!! I am NOT KIDDING they look like they are sweating to death. Apparently its all because there is a magical date in Italy and you DO NOT put your winter wardrobe away before that date no matter how hot it gets or you'll get the dreaded "congestione"!! Now I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that stifling yourself up in as many layers as possible in +25 and sunny weather will absolutely weaken your constitution and give you the "congestione!" They look absolutely RIDICULOUS!

They look at us like we're insane though because we're in t-shirts and shorts and dresses with no sweaters or coats. The looks I get are of alarm and worry for Reese, like I'm this awful mother who lets her child out in shorts at +25!
I feel like running around with a sign on me saying "Sono Canadese!" As in, this is as good as it gets sometimes in Calgary!!!
I honestly just can not get over it, it is the strangest thing! I've been told that on or about the 1st of May is the magical date that they can all shed their layers and bring out the summer wardrobe.

Apparently "dressing for the weather" is a totally foreign concept in Italy ;)

Lipari, Aeolian Islands, Sicily

Well our trip over to Lipari on the Aeolian Islands wasn't the best. The ferries hadn't been running all morning because of bad conditions. We got on one of the first ferries heading out and WOW, it was rough!!!!! Poor Reese went like a sheet of paper about 3/4 of the way over and then went clammy and threw up. Thankfully I'd recognized all the impending signs of puke and I'd thrown my north face rain jacket in front of her and she puked all over that. CHARMING. She recovered quickly as soon as we were off the boat though. Lipari is a beautiful island, however I think our opinions were dampened by the poor weather and the fact that we visited in the off season, on a SUNDAY. So hardly anything was open, and we wandered around in the streets which were empty and quite dreary looking with all the businesses closed up!!!! The hotel we stayed at, Residence Hotel La Giara was lovely, and we if I returned in the summer we would stay there. It had groves of citrus trees in the gardens, and a swimming pool, plus it was very close to the port and the main street with all the shops and restaurants. There had been a cancellation with the first hotel we booked, they had to close due to some sort of emergency and this hotel was recommended to us. I'm certainly glad it was!!! The trip back to the mainland in the boat wasn't that bad. I think you definitely need more than one night here though. Because we would have liked to have explored Vulcano( the island next to it) which is actually a volcano, and Stomboli which is an active volcano, but we just didn't have time.
ALSO...if you ever decide to go here and have a rental car, you can park it at Garage delle Isole in Milazzo and they pile you into an old car without seatbelts( yeah kind of scary!!!) and drive you to the port and pick you up. It was dirt cheap to do and they had EXCELLENT service!!!!!!!

The streets in Lipari(LEE-pah-ree). I'm sure these islands are awesome in the summer,but they seemed quite desolate and depressing in the winter!!!! Lots of the businesses were closed until the "season" started again and the weather was crappy the day we arrived.

Had lots of little alleyways though :)

Cefalu, Sicily

Cefalu was a beautiful little town on the north coast of Sicily about an hour away from Palermo. We stayed at the Hotel Kalura, which was a very nice hotel, but it was a little too far out of the old town for our liking. It was kind of a resort in itself so if you wanted to go and do that kind of thing in the summer I think it would be a nice one to stay at. If I ever returned to Cefalu though I would stay closer to the main beach/town.

Cefalu is a town that is mentioned in the histories as far back as 307BC. It sits on a rocky part of land jutting out into the sea. It has a beautiful beach just off the old town.

It has also been named as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy!!!

These were the mountains we could see driving from Palermo to Cefalu on the North Coast of Sicily.

The towns are so cool!! This one is built up on the ridge going up a mountain.

She also decided that she needed to lie in this chair in the sun for a bit. We were uber paranoid though because if you look in the background there isn't much stopping a two year old from throwing herself over the cliff, which is why Richard is holding onto her!!! They move quick at this age!

The "beach" There was a rocky beach type area at the far end, but I imagine that the sun loungers are probably set up here and its probably packed in the summer. There is also a very large pool so I suppose you could sit by that too!

The Cefalu Duomo- built in 1131 in Norman architecture style.

The apse is decorated with what is known as a "Pantocrater" which is Christ represented in a very specific way
"It depicts Christ facing forward, looking melancholy/stern and with his right hand raised in blessing. In his left he always is holding a book. Generally against a gold background and in a semi-dome type of area"

End of the nice weather, this was the next morning when a huge storm had rolled in overnight and there was gale force winds!! Unfortunately that was also the morning we had to take a ferry across to the Aeolian Islands!!

Palermo, Sicily

We went and visited Sicily for 10 days. It was fabulous!!!! I can definitely say that I love Sicily. I loved the food, I loved the landscape, I loved the people. I did NOT love the way they drove, the beggers, or the weather for 5 out of the 10 days. The food was absolutely divine. There is something they do to their spaghetti down there that made me want to eat spaghetti over and over for 10 days straight! I'm not sure what the mystery ingredient was but I'm on a mission to find out. We ate at a place called Klika near our hotel and it was awesome. It was there that we tasted our first Sicilian wine, Nero D'Avola and it was great!

We stayed at the Hotel Garibaldi which was much better than I was expecting. It was close enough that we walked to everything and it was very modern and had funky twists here and there. It also had an AMAZING breakfast that was included in the price of a room. Normally in Italy breakfast is a brioche and a coffee, but this place had eggs and bacon, the normal cereal, yogurt, breads, desserts, it was quite the spread! It also had sitting areas and a small bar and business office. For the price(63 Euros a night in the low season!) this hotel is totally worth it and if I was ever in Palermo I'd stay there again!

We also ate at a place called Spinnato near the hotel, this is where the crazy pigeons and beggars showed up. They send their kids into the tables to beg for money. However since the kids were dressed almost as nice as my own kid I have a hard time believing that they are destitute. They skipped happily away when people told them no, it was heartbreaking. However all I've read told me that the mafia controls a lot of the beggars in Palermo, so by giving them money you're essentially giving it to the mafia. Lovely.

We also ate at a lovely little family run restaurant and I took a card because it was great and I wanted to be able to send other people there, well do you think I can find the card....nope.

The driving is INSANE. I'm not kidding, you may have read my rants on the northern Italians and their piss poor driving habits. WELL....the Sicilians make the Milanese look like driving miss daisy. They are VERY aggressive drivers in Sicily and they pretty much just ignore all the rules of the road and its a free for all!!!!!! I thought I was going to have a heart attack for the first few days but by the day we came home I didn't even blink an eye when someone overtook us on a blind corner on a tiny mountain road...meh.....they're Sicilian, they'll figure it out :)

I definitely wouldn't miss Monreale if I were in Palermo, the Cathedral is beautiful and the two euros to walk to the top is definitely worth it!!!!!

All in all, if you're the type of person who can't appreciate beauty in urban decay, then Palermo might not be for you. The small streets, the markets, the theatres and cathedrals are beautiful, but you do have to walk past beggars and a bit of squalor to get there!!!!!

Teatro Massimo- The Opera House in Palermo renowned for its wonderful accoustics. It is apparently the biggest Opera house in Italy and the third largest in Europe.

The market street. It was insane!!! The fish men were yelling back and forth at each other. Then one seller would randomly start yelling prices out. There were people everywhere, fish on ice, amazing looking vegetables. There were even stalls selling all the common cleaning products. You seriously could have gotten everything you needed from this market. It was really fun to walk down!

A fairly accurate example of what the streets in old town Palermo look like. We were walking from the Teatro Massimo, through the market to end up at the Duomo. There were crazy small roads, and laundry hanging from everywhere. Buildings were crumbling down, it was exactly what I thought Sicily would look like. Beautiful in a very urban decay kind of way!

Don't worry he's not dead :) This was in the Duomo piazza. In Sicily apparently people just let their dogs out in the morning and they wander at will during the day returning home at night!!!! Seriously most of the dogs we saw wandering about were too healthy looking to be strays, and a lot had collars on. This one was just basking in the sunshine!!!!

It was strongly influenced by the Arabs that conquered here!!! It was started in 1185 and at one point actually became a Mosque after the Saracens captured Palermo.

This is Reese's reaction to the aggressive pigeons at the restaurant that we ate at. I'm not kidding when I say that they would dive bomb tables to get at the potato chips that were coming out with people's drinks!!!!! Thankfully we didn't have any potato chips! They would dive bomb and people would go scattering away from the table, glasses falling over, it was pure chaos :)

So contrary to popular belief, the roads in Sicily are totally NOT third world. They are quite good compared to say...Saskatchewan!!!!! No but seriously they were great on the Autostrada and small and windy once off the Autostrada, which is to be expected.

The Doric Temple at Segesta. Segesta was the political centre for the Elymian people, one of the indiginous people of Sicily. This is one of the best preserved temples in the world of this type. Built in the late 5th century BC!!!!!! Experts believe that this temple was never actually finished, and no one knows how it remained this intact for this long!!! You think as an unfinished temple it would have been plundered for its stone a LONG time ago!

Yes you can take a bus up the hill to the archeological site, but why do that when its just a short 20 min walk to the site????*LIARS!!!!* it was NOT a short walk because it was straight up hill!!!! hahahaha we got great views though, walked through fields of wildflowers and got some great exercise doing it though :)

The archeological site. Its is unknown how long a city has actually existed here, but definitely back to the 5th century BC, and probably long before that. It was pretty interesting to see the ruins and to read the descriptions of how the town might have looked back then.

Monreale Cathedral just outside Palermo. This cathedral is decorated with a gazillion little glass pieces of tile to create mosaics. It really was absolutely beautiful, and it was crazy to think how long it would have taken someone to do this back in the 12th century!!!

Well I was practicing making a "hazy" picture using sunlight and I think I definitely achieved hazy!!!!

This is Kermit. We found him in our backyard and after staring at him for a while and contemplating keeping him, we let him go down by the stream away from the snapping jaws of our two hounds!! He was super cute :)

These are Claire's(my cousin-in-law) shoes. They are fabulous and I thought that they deserved an artistic homage :)

Hyacinth is one of my favourite flowers because when they are in bloom the whole house smells like Spring. I bought these ones as bulbs in a container and they've been down in the kitchen for weeks now and have only just flowered. So I cut them and put them in this vase instead.

So I post them on Facebook because its super easy to do that from lightroom. But for some reason it won't let me export directly to this blog anymore so its getting neglected. I promise one of these days I'll actually sit down and fix that!!!!

It helps that I have an very imaginative child on days when I have no idea what to take pictures of!!! This is Reese playing "Vet" with Henry. I looked over and thought, aha, this is what I should try and capture. So I hid in the corner with my camera and snapped away. Neither of them paid any attention to me. Reese had lined up her playdough cutters on Henry's side, then put her chart next to them and I could hear her telling Henry "I do your chart" Then she apparently decided that he needed medicine which is why the spoon is next to him and then he actually stuck it in his mouth in the top picture which sent Reese into fits of giggle as she was saying to him" Henry take your medicine" "You sick?!" and I'm pretty sure she would have let him eat the spoon if I hadn't stopped her!!!!

Today is Saint David's Day and I desperately tried to find some daffodils in the village to take a cool picture with but nope.....so bath picture it is!

Today was a lazy day, I was already editing over 300 pictures from Rome so I just didn't have a creative bone left in my body!!!! Reese insisted on wearing her Snow White dress all day, she only took it off to go for a nap and then put it right back on again when she was done. She's never really liked it much before today!!!!!

This is Jenny, Amelie(who is asleep!!), Reese and I standing under one of the ruins in the Roman forum. We are two of a much larger group of ladies and the only two residing on this continent!!!!!! So we thought we'd continue on the tradition of a "group shot" at the meet-ups and here is our take on it :)

Saturday's a RUGBY day!!!!!!!
This is us at the Wales vs Italy 6 Nations Game. We originally planned the trip because we thought my cousin would be playing but unfortunately he was injured in a club game before the start of the tournament, so we decided to go and watch the game anyways :)
It was SO FUN! Kind of nerve wracking but a great atmosphere!!!

Friday we met up with our friends Jenny, Christian and Amelie and went and toured the Vatican and St.Peter's Basilica. Yes.....we saw the Sistene Chapel, it was pretty awesome!!! My picture of the day is of the alter in St. Peter's Basilica. Seriously, I thought I'd seen some impressive churches here in Italy but this one takes the cake! It's absolutely INSANE how elaborately decorated this Basilica is. It actually blows my mind to think that this was finished in 1626!!!!!!

Thursday was a busy day!!! So I snapped this on our very short flight to Rome :) This is Reese stuffing her face full of panini!

We are rat sitting Daisy and Cookie the rats for the Griers because they are in Paris at EuroDisney!!! this is Cookie the rat saying hello to Reese. She's pretty obsessed with them, asking how they are doing all day long even though Daisy had a nibble at her finger this morning! To be fair she was told about twenty times NOT to put her finger through the cage!!!!!
They are basically like big hamsters with tails :)

One of my photography assignments last week, posing her in different angles to the window to see how the light hits her face. She is intently watching out the window in this one because we had just seen a helicopter flying really low a few minutes before we started taking pictures and she was watching in case it came back I think!!!

Outside the Milan Aquarium. Its located in this really cool old building just inside Sempione Park. Its very small, but Reese seemed to enjoy herself and it was free so really we can't complain!!!!!

the gang at pizza on Friday Night. Every Friday a big group of us eat at this pizza place. It varies, one Friday it was only four of us, but we've been as large as 21 people!! Daniel the owner is great, seriously amazing pizza! So if you come and visit us we'll take you here for a pizza and vino :)

Self portrait day today. I'm aware I look perturbed in the top picture!!! I was getting frustrated with the whole self portrait thing because its a lot harder than it looks and so I was staring down the camera daring it to take an out of focus picture AGAIN. (Cause its totally the camera's fault right!?!?) However even if I look annoyed I still like it for some reason. The bottom three are my outtakes, like the nerd-o that I am!!!!!
Seriously, I'm glad I joined a project 52 where I have to take a self-portrait once a week because I had no idea how hard it was, and how AWFUL I look in about 95% of the pictures I take while attempting it!! I'm certainly learning my "angles" CHIN OUT!!!!

I know it doesn't look like one but its actually something I drew on the chalkboard and then took a picture of! I blackened the black and tweaked the colours. The quote was added in PSE. I got some bad news this morning about a wonderful lady that I worked with at the RGH ER. It made me really sad that I'm not at home, and that I won't be able to attend her memorial. I like this quote because I think its true that people live on not only just through their children, but by all the people they have touched. Lois was a charge nurse on my unit, and a legend in our department. She taught me so much in the few years that I was there. She was like a little tornado whirling around the department, managing to cram patients in every nook and cranny!!! I will never forget that, or her, or any of the things she taught me about being a better nurse.
Rest in Peace Lois.

How to see a doctor in Italy

First of all apologies for my lack of blogging, I've been taking two photography courses and seem to be unable to keep up with everything. Plus the kiddo has been home sick quite a bit in Feb and that severely decreases the amount of time I can spend on the computer!!!!

How to see a doctor in Italy

Well, Reese started talking like she had a frog in her throat Sunday evening, and started to produce pus galore from her eyes(ahhhh its charming being a parent!) By Monday evening the kid sounded like she was breathing through a very small hole so I looked down her throat and sure enough, her tonsils were taking over!!! I called the doctor on her cell phone(which is shared between all the moms in this village!!) and she said she could come first thing in the morning to see Reese.
So at 10:00 she rolls up on her scooter with a fancy red helmet and a matching FANTASTIC red leather doctor's bag!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!
She did a very thorough examination on Reese, who took a shine to her immediately. The exam and the history taken was all done in our living room and she examined Reese on the couch, pulling all sorts of things out of the fabulous red leather bag to use.
Now I'd heard from the other moms that this particular pediatrician preferred using naturopathic remedies to medicine if she could. But one look down Reese's throat had her writing a prescription for an 8 day course of antibiotics!!!! What's kind of great here though is that they prescribe lactobacillus(enterogerminia) at the same time to try and ward off the diarrhea that we all know comes with kids taking antibiotics.
I was saying to her how I think its wonderful that a pediatrician does house calls here in Italy because I can't see any doctor's back home doing that and she said her theory is that if she has an office that all the sick kids come into, then one comes in with vomiting and other one with tonsillitis and the next week they've just switched illnesses!!! She prefers to go to the patient, which I think is just AWESOME :) The visit was 90 Euros so about $130 but we can claim it back from insurance so I don't mind at all.
She also advised just as she was leaving to take Reese outside for some fresh air because "its a very nice day today" Old school.......I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!

Then we went to the pharmacy, didn't have to show any sort of insurance card or anything, they didn't even keep the "prescription". The antibiotics cost 3.25 Euros so about five dollars! So far I'm loving my experience with the Italian health care system!

My vegetable debacle and catching up on project 365

So this morning, Reese is home sick from school with the "congestione" aka the common cold. She was really congested yesterday and I was going to get the doctor to come today but she actually sounds better this morning, just not well enough to go spread it around at school!!! And yes.....here in Italy doctor's still make house calls, old school style! Its awesome :)

The vegetable man stops his truck here at 9am every Tuesday and I'm told his vegetables and fruit are awesome so this weekend we didn't buy any produce at the grocery store, the plan was I'd get it from the vegi man. Its chilly and pouring rain here today, I bundle Reese up, try to get her into the stroller while holding an umbrella over her(yes you can imagine how well that worked out for me) then I'm walking towards the exit of the complex, trying to hold the umbrella over Reese and push the stroller at the same time. Yeah, I'm not coordinated enough to do that. So Reese's feet/legs are getting soaked, its cold out, I'm getting soaked. So I stopped just before the gate and turned around because clearly it was a really stupid idea to go take my sick child outside to get vegetables in the pouring rain. Sometimes I think my brain might not actually work first thing in the morning. We are now dry and warm in the house, with no vegetables. *sigh* Guess Richard will have to stop on his way home.

Another to add to my Italian Housewife series

It was nail painting day in our house, we have matching fingers and toes! Reese was VERY excited about having painted nails :)

Our Valentines Day fun!!! We made paper Valentines and wrote all over them, then we made heart shaped Valentine cookies. Reese also delivered her valentines to the dogs and gave them treats. The car is from Daddy, its the limited edition Barbie Fiat 500!!

The Milan Apertivo Experience- Date Night #1 :)

Well first off, here is how to walk in stiletto heels in Milan....................DON'T :) I'm fairly certain that Milanese ladies have been trained from a very early age on how to navigate cobblestone streets, crumbling, uneven sidewalks and subway grates as large as the pavement. I did get myself around but we ended up not going for a walk before heading home because my shoes had ripped my feet into strips, note to self for next date night- get better shoes! I actually just bought a pair of Camper shoes today that look fabulous. I've noticed a lot of the Italian ladies wearing them, they have big thick rubber heel but still manage to look fabulous, so maybe I'll wear those next time.

We didn't have a solid plan just to head into Milan for apertivo and dinner. For those of you that don't know what an apertivo is, Milan has moulded it into something that takes it above and beyond what it is in the rest of Italy!!!
Apertivo
" Aperitivo italiano is NOT a “Happy Hour” in the traditional sense. Happy Hour in the U.S. is a concept about getting a drink “discount” and drinks and/or appetizers are usually discounted or bundled together. Not so in Italy. Aperitivo in Italy is plain and simply aperitivo: A pre-dinner drink, meant to “open” the palate and it gives you a chance to socialize, relax, and nibble as dinner approaches or is overlooked altogether. Aperitivo is more popular in the north of Italy, though you’ll find a form of it throughout Italy. Drinks during aperitivo are not only not discounted, but often they have a supplement added to them to compensate for the refreshments being offered alongside. How much supplement will depend on the reputation and location of where you are"

So basically you go into these places, its CROWDED in the best ones and you have to fight for a seat, then you order a drink(alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and then they bring you a plate of bread with meat on it, olives and potato chips. Then there is usually a big food spread at the bar too, salami, bruchetta, brioches, pastries, vegetable plates, fruit etc etc. Apparently some of them go all out and there is pasta in a buffet style!! All of this food just comes with the one drink you order!! Its brilliant really.
We ended up going to a place called
Radetzky
which I found out today is described as "possibly one of the most “fighetto” (posh) bars around, on a nice night the square in front of this bar fills up with hundreds of people in suits, carrying motorino helmets and checking out…everyone"

Well it certainly was busy, we were lucky to score a table right off the bat but otherwise people just milled around like vultures waiting for someone to leave!!! We saw one disagreement(which of course in Italian sounds like they are about to throw down) about who got the one seat at this big table. The waiter came over and sorted it very quickly. Hilarious! A lady walked in wearing what looked like a small fox on her head in the form of a hat. There was another lady who I'm sure must be a famous porn star because, well, she looked like one!!! We are laughing this morning that Radetzky is one of the "places to be seen" in Milan, well we were seen there!!! hahaha We only stayed for one drink and some snacks there and then we wandered down the pedestrian way to a place called
Bento
it was a sushi restaurant and it was SO GOOD!!!! Scrumptious, delicious, BUONISSIMO!!!!
So if any of you come to visit and have a hankering for sushi we've got just the place for you. After that we walked back down Corso Como. We went in and checked out Corso Como 10 which is another awesome little place tucked back out of the way in its own private interior garden, might go there next time.
We saw Lollapaloosa, and Hollywood which are two of the major clubs in the Corso Como area, Hollywood wasn't open yet but Lollapaloosa was PACKED with the young and fabulous looking!!!!
We had a blast window shopping and people watching, the Italians are always amusing to watch, they come out in the most ridiculous outfits!!!!!

Yesterday we went for a day trip to Pisa. I went a little insane with my camera but here is one picture that I edited last night for my Project 365 picture of Reese and Jessica leaning like the tower!!!! I highly recommend a visit to Pisa if you're ever in Italy, we didn't get to see everything we wanted to see on our day trip. *sigh* guess that means we'll have to go again!!!! :)

So this is the bike that my Dad bought Reese when we were in Vancouver. She didn't get it at the time and was never interested in riding it. WELL, all of a sudden this kid wants to ride her bike all day long!!! Every time we go to the park now the bike and helmet need to come too and there is a BIG meltdown if I say no. She still just sits on the seat and shuffles around on it but she's getting more confident every day. Its meant to be a balance bike, so no pedals and they just push themselves along and then eventually start gliding along. The little boy at the park that tried it out loved it and was bit more brave on it than Reese was. I think she'll get the hang of it by the summer though!!!!

We were quite excited to open our email here this morning and see that the Flames had beat the Canucks!! YEAHHHHHH!!! We were even more excited when we found out it was playing on Sky Sports at 3 in the afternoon :) So here is Reese showing some team spirit.

Project 365:Day 15

This is one of the stained glass windows inside the Duomo in Milan's Centro. The Duomo is gothic in style and GIGANTIC. What makes it impressive is that it was built over FIVE centuries. The ground was broke to build it in 1386, and the finishing touches weren't put on it until 1965. It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the second largest Catholic cathedral in the world.

It houses the remains of Saint Carlos Borromeo(you might remember seeing pictures that I posted of his home on Lake Maggiore) Saint Carlos is the patron saint for the prevention/cure of ulcers/colic/stomach disorders and also the patron saint of bishops and apple orchards. RANDOM I know!!!! But there were a LOT of candles lit to him!!!

Project 365 Day 13- Seriously whose idea WAS this!?!

So today's picture lacks in creativity, but it definitely explains why I feel like I'm destined for the madhouse in less than 5 days. Reese's playschool, being generous and lovely, bought her a present for Christmas. Its a RECORDER, you know the one we were all forced to try and learn in school!!! The sound hasn't improved much let me tell you and Reese just walks around with it in her mouth blowing random high pitched notes over and over and over and over until I feel like I might throw myself out the window. I'm not kidding when I say that it might actually be the MOST annoying sound on earth. Its been a particularly painful week for us as I think Reese is giving up her daytime naps(WAYYYYYYY too soon for my liking) but she doesn't sleep at night if she's slept during the day and I'd much rather have sleep at night thank you very much!!!!
